This patient has been suffering with upper back and neck tension over the last few months due to his desk based job.

This tension has created reduced mobility in his neck which is causing him issues in the gym and even when checking his blind spot in the car.

In his treatment we provided manipulation in his neck and mid back. Followed by soft tissue work to ease the tension and improve his mobility.

We finished this treatment up by providing a rehab plan to prevent this from returning in the future.

In this video we are performing spinal manipulation through the thoracic spine.

People who tend to benefit from this type of treatment are usually suffering from some sort of back pain, neck pain, headaches and postural issues.

Manipulation is used a lot in Chiropractic.
People tend to think we are ‘putting the bones back into alignment’. However this is not the case.

The ‘cracking noise’ we hear during manipulation is just gas being released from the joints, just like when we pop our knuckles.

Manipulation is used for two main reasons. The first being to help alleviate pain and discomfort, as it can give someone quick relief and take pressure off the irritated structures.

The second being it helps increase range of motion through that area.

Manipulation is a tool we use, however it’s not effective alone. There are other manual therapies we use which can be just as effective.

In addition, unless we provide patients proper lifestyle and exercise advice, anything we perform in clinic will only provide short term changes.

This condition occurs when the plantar fascia, a strong band of tissue that supports the arch of your foot becomes irritated.

The plantar fascia is designed to absorb the high stresses we place on our feet through walking, running and sporting activities.

However sometimes we can over exceed the tissues capacity and it can become irritated.

Other causes can be poor footwear, flat or over arched feet, age (common between 40-60) and obesity.

Symptoms include pain on the bottom of the foot and near the heel. Pain with the first few steps after getting out of bed. Increased pain after activity.

Here are some stretches and exercises that help ease the symptoms of this condition.

In this video are some exercise ideas which can be very useful in your return back to physical activity.

We recommend that you return to exercise in a slow and progressive manner to help you recover from pregnancy and avoid future back pain.

The exercises are focused on core/pelvic stability. Once you feel comfortable with these movements you can increase the difficulty level.

Runners Knee (ITB pain)

Over the recent months we have seen an increasing prevalence of runners knee due to the number of people training for the Cardiff half marathon.

The IT band (ITB) is a dense, fibrous band of connective tissue that runs along the lateral thigh from the hip to the knee, aiding in lateral hip and knee stability, especially when loading through one leg (walking, running, talking stairs, jumping off one leg, etc)

ITB syndrome is the second most common pain problem among runners and the primary cause of lateral knee pain

-

Research suggests that affected individuals should incorporate exercises to strengthen the hip abductors (outer glute muscles) and motor control (coordination) exercises designed to prevent the affected limb from collapsing medially (inward) toward the other leg as this may sensitise the region
-

The following exercises are just a few of the many that I might incorporate for this condition:

1️⃣ Step Downs
2️⃣ Standing Clamshell - with Band
3️⃣ Side Plank - Hip Abduction Repeats
4️⃣ Single leg Romanian deadlift- offset dumbbell

✅ In general, each of these can be done for 3-4 sets of 8-15 repetitions and performed 2-3 times per week (with a day off in between working days)

✅ On the standing exercises, focus on preventing the knee from moving medially/inward toward the other leg

Lower back pain is far more complicated than just one muscle. However I do find that the quadratus lumborum tends to be involved in some shape or form, especially in acute flare ups of low back pain.
—

By being able to identify and treat this muscle you may not necessarily find the cause but you’ll definitely be able to reduce some symptoms in your lower back. Then when symptoms are reduced you can start to crack with more long term solutions.
—

I’ve shown some nice self-relief techniques to calm down that QL muscle. If you need deeper pressure, take a big breath in (inhale) and a big breath out (exhale). On the exhale, the muscles will relax and you’ll be able to push the tennis ball in deeper.

Due to people working from home, I’m seeing a lot of tension headache cases. These can arise from numerous reasons, such as stress, sleep, posture, activity levels etc.

However an area which seems to be the main culprit of pain and tenderness seems to be the sub occipital region.

Here is a great and simple technique to help ease the symptoms.

Make sure to use a tennis ball, as anything firmer will hurt like hell!!

Glute pain can arise from numerous factors such overuse in the gym, prolonged sitting, general tightness etc.

—

A muscle that lies deep in the glute complex is the piriformis muscle. If stretched regularly this nagging buttock pain can often be diminished.

—

This movement shown is called a pigeon stretch and helps get a very deep stretch into the glutes. It can help with low back pain, hip mobility, sciatic symptoms and general buttock pain. Add this into your routine and see how you get on.
