Piriformis syndrome
- Neuromuscular disorder that occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed/irritated by the piriformis muscle causing pain, tingling and numbness down the leg.
- Risk factors include blunt trauma (fall), sitting or sleeping in 1 position for long periods, long distance biking, driving.
- Chronic pain in buttock that may radiate down leg, worse with walking and squatting
- Tenderness and spasm in buttock region
Groin strain
- Stretch or tear of the thigh adductor muscles
- More common in older athletes due to reduced elasticity
- Risk factors include lack of flexibility, playing sports, prior injury, over use, inadequate warm up.
- Medial thigh pain, swelling and bruising (depending on severity), weakness.
Hip bursitis
- Inflammation of bursa around the hip
- Risk factors include repetitive trauma or compensation to a co-existing issue, overuse, obesity, lower back issue, prior surgery
- Pain (usually a dull ache) over posterior or lateral thigh, pain usually worse in activity, pain worse when lying on affected side, tender to touch.
